Responding to the theme Freespace at the 16th International Architecture Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia 2018, Repair at the Australian Pavilion, curated by Baracco+Wright Architects in collaboration with Linda Tegg, aims to expand the point of view from the object of architecture, to the way it operates in its context, advocating a role for architecture that catalyses or actively engages with the repair of the places it is a part of. REPAIR aims to expand the point of view from the object of architecture, to the way it operates in its context, advocating a role for architecture that catalyses or actively engages with the environmental, social and cultural repair of the places it is a part of.Repair as an approach to architectural thinking is set to become a critical strategy of architectural culture. It is particularly relevant to Australian architects who work in one of the most diverse and ecologically sensitive landscapes in the world. Uniquely, our cities are interspersed and bordered by remnant vegetation and often connected to large natural systems as well as built over the traditional cultural landscapes of our First Nations peoples. They are also scenes of developing ecosystems at which humans are at the centre of. This book unpacks the theme, documents the exhibition and catalogues Australian architectural projects that are conceived through acts of repair exhibited at the Australian pavilion.

Cette méthode, accessible à tous, est le fruit de quinze ans d’interventions auprès d’un public scolaire et adulte. Elle ne demande pas d’autre investissement qu’un peu de curiosité et une bonne paire de chaussures !

Il ne suffit pas de poser le regard sur un paysage pour qu'il se révèle à nous. Car, loin du simple décor, le paysage constitue notre cadre de vie, chargé de sens, à partager avec d'autres, qui le perçoivent, le ressentent et se l'approprient de multiples façons. Tout au long du 20e siècle, le paysage est progressivement devenu un enjeu politique de premier ordre, comme en témoigne l'adoption de la Convention européenne du paysage. Pourtant, les acteurs censés le protéger, le gérer ou le transformer peinent à en saisir la complexité et à valoriser son potentiel. Un travail de formation et d'éducation par, pour et avec le paysage se révèle dès lors nécessaire. En sensibilisant, en créant le débat et en confrontant les disciplines et les métiers, cet ouvrage offre un panel d'expériences didactiques au service des acteurs du paysage d'aujourd'hui et de demain. Les textes ici rassemblés alimentent une réflexion de fond sur les enjeux éducatifs autour du paysage. L'ouvrage numérique associé, augmenté d'une vingtaine de contributions, donne accès à un descriptif de chacun des dispositifs pédagogiques, à des ressources multimédias, et au retour critique des auteurs.

Landscapes develop and evolve through an interacting series of processes - climatic, geological, ecological and cultural - over varying periods of time. These processes shape the structure and character of the landscapes which we experience. Over time, distinctive patterns emerge - ranging in scale from the distribution of small plants to the sculptured sides of a huge canyon. Our perception of these patterns goes beyond just their visual appreciation - beautiful though they may be - into a richer understanding of how we experience our environment. By understanding this complex pattern-process interaction we can obtain a deeper awareness of landscape and our place in it - as inhabitants and as shapers. The book explores the nature of patterns and ways of classifying them before studying the nature of perception (primarily visual but including other senses), then proceeds to relate this perception to aesthetics and from there to the design process. From this point the main driving processes in landscape are introduced alongside the resulting patterns, these being climatic, landform, ecosystem and cultural aspects. It is this integrative approach of looking at landscape as a kind of self-organising system, overlaid by conscious human planning activities and the unity of pattern and process, which makes this book unique. Landscape draws from a wide range of neighbouring disciplines, of which the landscape planner or designer needs to be aware, but which are often taught as distinct elements. Bell binds these fundamentals together, which enables the landscape to be 'read', and this reading to be used as the basis for planning and design.
